We chat with Phil Layton, founder of Middlesbrough’s new and exciting craft brewery/taproom and event space, Play Brew Co.

Tell us more about Play Brew Co.
Play Brew Co. was born from a passion for homebrewing and nostalgia. we are Middlesbrough’s newest craft brewery and taproom, serving an array of locally brewed craft beers. the beers range from IPA’s, pale ales, porters and pilsner lager! we are more of a USA influenced type of brewery than a traditional brewery.

We will be encouraging local talent new and old to perform here down at the taproom. some events will be free others will be to pay.

Where are you located and what do you hope to bring to the area?
We are situated in Cannon Park, in a warehouse close proximity to the Town Centre.  Middlesbrough train station is a 12 mins walk and Bus Station is 2 mins walk. Being born and bred in Middlesbrough and proud of my roots, I wanted Play Brew to be in Middlesbrough to give the local community a flagship brewery/taproom and also put the area on the map for craft breweries.

What events have you got in the pipeline? How would an artist go about getting a gig at Play Brew Co?
We have a very flexible events space in the brewery, we have lots of live music booked in, DJ sets, themed nights, wedding reception, charity events, street food trucks. If anyone is interested in playing at the brewery  please email – [email protected]

what are your long-term ambitions?
Hopefully, we’ll be sponsoring Middlesbrough football club’s shirts! Ha, serious I just hope people of Middlesbrough will enjoy a place of difference like they do in the big cities such as New York, London, Newcastle and Leeds to name a few. Just be nice to give Middlesbrough a hub for the audience and local talent.
