A film following artists Gordon Dalton & S Mark Gubb will get a one-off North-East screening on 1st October before being submitted to film festivals.
Northern Valhalla is a new film by artists Gordon Dalton & S Mark Gubb. Commissioned by Eden Arts/The 66 and filmed in 2021, it follows a road trip along the A66 from East coast to West coast. Made during the pandemic the film mixes footage from the journey mixed with imagery from various sources, including TikTok and various online contributors, to create a thought provoking mish-mash of sound and vision that commemorates the present for an unknown future.
Dalton & Gubb’s previous collaborations have resulted in pop-up heavy metal bars, apocalyptic radio shows, failed trips to the North Pole and attempting to restage Evel Knieval’s ill-fated stunt at Snake River Canyon. Their absurd artworks are informed by popular culture and politics and shine a light on the overlooked, the unknown, shared memories and forgotten stories from our collective past and imagined futures.
Dalton & Gubb add ‘Life along the A66, or anywhere for that matter isn’t just a glossy, touristy drone film of our best bits, and it isn’t some boring film you’d see in a gallery. You see a much better reflection of current life on TikTok, and it’s funny, opinionated, diverse and immediate. We wanted to incorporate all of that to mirror the anxiety and fear that people feel every day, not just during lockdown. It’s a brutal, haunting reflection on the past, present and future, with just the slightest chink of light, hope and humour.’
This one-of filming takes place at The Juice Box, Middlesbrough (above Pineapple Black gallery). Doors are 9:30pm with film starting at 10pm. Entry is first come first served and pay what you please.
