The 17th Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival (BFMAF) returns to cinemas in Berwick-upon-Tweed from 10th – 12 September and online via its website from Friday 10 September to Thursday 30 September 2021 making the event more widely accessible than ever.

The 2021 Programme includes films from 16 international artists and filmmakers who collectively share the Berwick New Cinema Award, a non competitive prize that includes some of the most distinctive works of new cinema. There will also be workshops, online exhibitions and live performances in the Propositions alongside Essential Cinema, a retrospective series featuring newly restored films that evoke connections between political and spiritual awakenings, taking in projects from India, Cuba, USA and Palestine. On top of that, the festival’s Work In Progress will be focusing on Congolese director and visual artist Nelson Makengo’s Rising Up at Night (2022).

Festival Director Peter Taylor adds: “Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival was created by artists in 2005. From the very outset, solidarity with artists and filmmakers has been central to all of our activities and work. We are constantly re-considering the Festival’s vision while planning for its best futures. This year we set out to create possibilities to address how the pandemic has heightened the already hostile conditions for the production and exhibition of cinema and artists’ moving image globally. Jemma Desai who joins us as Head of Programming for the 2021 Festival has been inspirational. Her abilities to articulate and connect social justice work and its practices through to festival production, programming and exhibition have brought many conversations newly alive. This ongoing work is what shapes the programme we announce today.”

Festival Passes for the In-person festival, along with Individual screening tickets and Online Festival Passes are available via the BFMAF website.
