Festival circuits are an important part of a filmmaker’s journey and yet is an area of the industry that offers few opportunities for filmmakers that aren’t straight, white and/or male. This is something that award-winning, women-led production company, Rianne Pictures is trying to address with their inclusive short film festival Women X.

2020’s official selection showcased 32 short films including Love Spell (Best Director, Lauren Ververs), Dispel (Best Writing), The Train to QinLing (Best Animation) and Antonio (Best Drama). The Festival also had strong support from partners such as ScreenQueens, Write Her Direct Her, and The Light Leaks.

For its second installation, taking place 10th – 12th September 2021, Women X hopes to combine in-person and virtual experience to continue showcasing North East talent, alongside creating a global collaborative space with accessible screenings, panels, workshops, networking opportunities, and self-care spaces.

The festival is looking for film submissions directed, written, or produced by a woman, female-identifying or non-binary filmmaker that are no longer than 20 minutes in length. Submissions are open until 30th June, to submit, click here
