German drama West, based on Julia Franck’s novel Lagerfeuer, opens at the Tyneside Cinema on Friday 12th June. It stars Jordis Triebel, who won Best Actress at the German Film Awards for her role as Nelly Sennf, an East Berliner attempting to cross over to the West with her son Alexej by marrying a West German. Matters are complicated when intelligence agencies interrogate Nelly about her ex-boyfriend, who died three years earlier and who may have been hiding something.

The film was previewed at Montreal Film Festival in 2013 to critical acclaim, and is finally getting a limited UK release, with the excellent Tyneside Cinema one of the few cinemas showing it. West looks to be a gripping depiction of Berlin in the time of the wall, with a small-scale, human story reminiscent of 2006’s brilliant The Lives of Others. It is directed by Christian Schwochow and plays at Tyneside Cinema from tomorrow.

West comes to the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle from Friday 12th June.
