Reliably informed

“Gritty British drama” are words that might make some cinemagoers sigh. It might be the genre most common homegrown genre in the country but, like most genres, the kitchen sink drama has also been done to death, making some of its tropes a little cliched and overworked.

Guy Myhill’s The Goob may be another working class drama, but it also has something a little different too. Set and filmed entirely in rural areas of Norfolk, the film follows “Goob,” a sixteen year old ragamuffin caught in the middle of an extraordinary summer heatwave. His mum begins to settle down with a swarthy stock car driver and infamous ladies’ man Gene, who has cast his dark spell over her. If it all seems like it might be going into gritty broken home territory, The Goob throws a curveball when an exotic pumpkin picker name Eva arrives and turns Goob’s life around for the better. A tale of dreams and hope, The Goob takes the gritty British drama and turns some of the conventions on its head.

The Goob comes to the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle from Friday 5th June.
