Based on a memoir by Vera Brittain of her chilling recollections of the horrors of the First World War, Testament of Youth is a heart-wrenching story of the battle from the unlikely perspective of the woman. A tale of love and remembrance it’s a gripping, passionate journey about finding a glimmer hope in the darkest of times.

Vera (Alicia Vikander) is a feisty, loving young woman, who breaks the chains of wartime prejudice and fights against all odds to achieve her goals. Despite the judgement she faces from both people in her hometown and her family, Vera wins a scholarship to Oxford University. Just as she has achieved everything that she has ever hoped for, she falls in love with her brother’s charismatic friend Roland Leighton (Kit Harington). As shadow of the war looms, Vera’s spirit does not let her sit idly in her home. She volunteers as a nurse and her desire to help others results in her experiencing loss, pain, and grief, as she watches those closest to her as they are destroyed in the ruthless war machine. After she goes back to Oxford, Vera Brittain engages in an act of remembrance that will be remembered in history.

Testament of Youth is a powerful story of love, war and the power of the human spirit. Starring Alicia Vikander, Kit Harington, Colin Morgan, and Dominic West, it is definitely one of January’s must-see titles.

Testament of Youth comes to the Tyneside Cinema from Friday 23rd January.
