Reliably informed

Touché: an acknowledgement during a discussion of a good or clever point made at one’s expense by another person (according to Google). This is closest French word I can think of to describe this French film, acted in English. “Experienced” actress Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche, The English Patient, Three Colors Trilogy) is hired to act in a remake of a play she starred in 20 years previously, it launched her career, so she has happy memories of playing Sigrid, a pretty young girl who manipulates her boss Helena into committing suicide. She is no longer young, so is cast as the older woman boss-lady, no problem, so she heads to a remote Alpen village, Sils Maria, to rehearse with vivacious young Hollywood starlet Valentine (Kirsten Stewart, Twilight, Still Alice). Life begins to imitate art and Maria is faced with a mirror image of herself at the same age, which is unsettling to say the least. There is more to this film though, it is about love, showbizznezz and desire. A favourite on the film festival scene, director Olivier Assayas has created a gripping piece which tackles some unusual but intriguing situations.

Clouds of Sils Maria comes to the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle on Friday 29th May.
