After success with Million Dollar Baby, Gran Torino and Invictus, Clint Eastwood has another triumph in his sights with this true story of the U.S. Army’s most prolific sniper, Chris Kyle, in American Sniper, which comes to the Tyneside Cinema from Friday 23rd January.

With recent events, this film will certainly raise a number of questions, but is more focussed on one man’s battle with the inevitable institutionalisation of war than the glory of killing the enemy. Bradley Cooper, who was excellent in American Hustle, takes the starring role and delivers a strong performance of a man who endured four tours of duty in Iraq. The film follows our hero as his stock rises following an unprecedented success rate with a rifle in the competitive Navy SEALs. As he becomes a hero amongst his peers, he also attracts the attention of insurgents who are increasingly desperate to see him dead. Kyle suffers not only the stress of a high pressure and lethal role, but also the pressure of having a dependent family who could become a target themselves.

In a similar vein to The Hurt Locker, this is not a glorification of war, but rather a reminder of the stark psychological damage that can be inflicted upon soldiers serving in consecutive missions.
