David McGovern of Newcastle record store Beyond Vinyl is putting out a Christmas Charity Single, Stay Another Day (a cover of the East 17 number 1 single) in aid of Mind and Batten Disease Family Association. The track will be available to buy on CD from 4th December (pre-order here).

We asked David to tell us more about what inspired the project…

A couple of years ago after leaving my job to set Beyond Vinyl up I decided to record a Christmas song as I had always wanted to make and release a single and album. After recording the track I abandoned it and did nothing else with it as I didn’t have the belief in myself.

During the first Covid lockdown I was always thinking about what I could be doing to keep my business above water and ended up offering local personal deliveries which I did myself on my road bike. This ended up being a great idea and was a hit with my customers. An added bonus was I was getting out and not sitting at home stressing or getting depressed thinking about how badly the pandemic was going to affect my business.

The mental health and physical benefits were an added bonus to me and I got to ride all over the region during the summer which was great. I do my best thinking when I’m alone, out running, walking or cycling, though you could say I have some of my mad and weirdest ideas when thinking which could be dangerous.

Over the summer whilst delivering records to my customers I had plenty of time to think and as well as other out there ideas I toyed with using the time to record a Christmas single and raise some much needed funds for charity. Then in late September I thought about it again and messaged a couple of musician friends and told them my idea and whether it could be arranged, programmed and recorded in time for a late November release.

So a week or 2 later we just did it and now the single is out. I have been raising funds for the Batten Disease Family Association for over a year now after manning a stall for a friend who was doing a fundraiser at the stand comedy club for the charity.

The work they do is amazing and the support they offer the families of the children that suffer from this awful disease is second to none. Mind also do some fantastic work and mental health is a subject that people feel uncomfortable talking about or admitting to be suffering from which can leave people feeling like they are a burden. Having suffered from depression and struggled in the past I know how important these charities are especially during the last 9 months.

Getting to some positives.

Releasing this single was a way of raising some funds for charity but also a way of spreading some joy over the Christmas period. Stay Another Day was an easy choice as a cover as one it’s a great song and has a deeper story behind it than just a Christmas hit.

Though it ended up being a Christmas hit and No. 1 single, it was written after the suicide of the brother of Tony Mortimer of East 17. So this song written about suicide. Written as a love song and now known as a Christmas song why wouldn’t I choose that!

I hope the single can bring a little joy to people in these strange times and hopefully the message that we aren’t alone gets across and if someone is feeling like they can’t cope then I hope they know that people do care about them and help is out there for them.

Favourite Xmas Songs.

There are so many I could choose but I have gone for these as they bring back some great childhood memories (excluding Stay Another Day…)

I would have to go for, in no particular order….
1) Coldcut – Christmas Break
2) Jackson 5 – Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
3) Pogues & Kirsty MacColl – Fairytale Of New York
4) Bing Crosby – White Christmas
5) Paul McCartney – Wonderful Christmas Time
