Sports Team are a six-piece based in London but hailing from various corners of England. The band take influence from indie pioneers Pavement to nineties post-punk outfit The Family Cat. They are hailed by the press as part of a new wave of guitar band saviours and are worthy of the acclaim, with their energetic sound, poetic wit and quaint style. On Saturday 17th August they find themselves heading North to perform at Hardwick Live, so we caught up with them for a short but sweet chat.

How did Sports Team come together?
We were all seasonal pickers at a Kent orchard. Oli had his coat caught on a branch and Ben managed to unhook him. They both came to the oast humming these tunes and we thought right…let’s form a band.

Describe your sound.

What’s the secret behind writing great song lyrics?
Sing about what you know, but make it uplifting. We’ve always tried to romanticise the things we find mundane.

Which team from sporting history is your favourite and why?
Quite liked that Bangladesh side that drew the 1 match series in India 2015. Really appealing mix of young talent and old heads.

What can people expect from your performance at Hardwick Live?
Should be something. Know the Newcastle crowd has always been kind to us. There’s a lake nearby isn’t there?
