SUPER SEVEN: Big Romance

North East indie rockers Big Romance unveil their new single, Self Medicate. Describing the track as a “wistfully optimistic image of warm days trapped under a sunshade of hopeless introspection, seeking comfort in nostalgia but ultimately struggling to come to terms with the world moving on”, the track swaps their usual indie punk vibes for a more introspective, albeit no less epic, sound.

If you could instantly learn any language, which one would you choose, and why?

Dan: Italian for sure. I’m a massive fan of Andrea Bocelli and I just love the way it sounds. I’m also a massive fan of pizza and pasta so I’d love to be able to visit one day and order something one day without sounding like I’m sitting a GCSE speaking exam. 

Louis: It would have to be French for me! I’ve always loved the language and the amount of times I’ve redownloaded Duolingo to attempt to learn it is becoming a joke now. 

Describe a time when you had to adapt to a completely new environment or culture. How did you handle it?

Louis: Speaking of French, I ended up living in Quebec City for over a year where almost no-one speaks English. It was one of the most challenging yet rewarding things I’ve ever done. Some memorable words I learnt were frites, boeuf bourguignon, bien cuit. I worked in a restaurant. 

Dan: This probably sounds a bit mad but in recent memory the most intense new environment had to be this black tie ball I attended earlier this year. I think it was just bizarre to be surrounded by people who were worlds apart from me and how I was brought up. I’ve always found formal settings a bit uncomfortable but it was actually quite fun. It was like being at a wedding full of bankers and people in a different tax bracket to me. 

What’s the most unusual or interesting place you’ve ever visited, and what made it memorable?

Louis: New Zealand. It was the most beautiful country I’ve ever visited. I think there’s still a part of me trapped there and I’m itching to get back to it. Highlights were the sunsets, spotting Kiwis and the German travellers who are friends for life.

Dan: Vegas. It’s absolutely mental. My dad and I had saved to go for my 21st birthday and it’s just a completely different world over there. 

If you could have a conversation with any animal, which one would you pick, and what would you ask?

Louis: I’d love to ask my dog why she thinks it’s funny to lick her arse then try and kiss me. 

Tell us about a hobby or interest that you’re passionate about

Louis: I am that classic gym bro right now and honestly this question is dangerous as I won’t stop telling you how much I can bench or how much protein is 200g of chicken breast (45g).

What’s the most creative way you’ve ever surprised someone?

Dan: This has to be when I bought a PS5 during lockdown. Greenup (lead guitar) and I were living together and we’d really hit that wall of “wow when is this going to get better”. We’d been trying for weeks to get one and I’d somehow managed to order one by complete luck at 3 in the morning. It arrived at 9pm that night and I’d called him down to come look at something and he was in complete shock to see it sitting on the table. I’ve got a great video of his reaction that I love to watch because it was such a massive moment for us in terms of finally having something new to do. I think that’ll stick with me forever. 

If you were a character in a board game, what would your special ability be?

Dan: I’ve always been super competitive so it would have to be the ability to still have one more go even if someone beats me. Like a redemption thing. I’m a sore loser!
