In August of 1988 the ‘world’s most dangerous hip hop group’ NWA exploded onto the rap scene with their debut, and now seminal, record Straight Outta Compton.

Despite their music initially being viewed by many as a glorification of a criminal lifestyle, resulting in a nationwide radio ban, the importance of their work has since been widely appreciated and the group are now seen as one of the most important acts in the history of hip hop.

The story of their beginnings, their meteoric rise to the top and subsequent fall has been made into this summer’s must watch film, also titled Straight Outta Compton. On Friday 28th August, Newcastle’s immersive cult cinema collective Screenage Kicks brings the film to the Tyneside Cinema for an evening of hip hop celebration.

The film itself has been breaking American box office records, making over $100m just ten days after its release, and has been widely critically acclaimed. However, the box office smash will be but a fraction of the evening’s entertainment, with breakdancers, rappers and DJs performing before the screening and a hip hop-inspired gin and juice cocktail party rounding off the evening afterwards.

Furthermore, 80s/90s hip hop outfits are encouraged, so it’s a tremendous opportunity for hip hop connoiseurs of the north east to dust off the giant clock necklaces they might have hanging about in the back of their cupboards.

This promises to be a great evening for any hip hop fans, as well as a brilliant opportunity to take in one this summer’s top films in unique style.

Screenage Kicks presents Straight Outta Compton at the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle on Friday 28th August.
