Preview: From Our Streets to Our Seas: Tales of Heritage, Memory and Myth @ North Shields Fish Quay

Salt Market Social hosts a one-night celebration of North Shields’ rich heritage on Friday 24th October (from 6.30 pm), as From Our Streets to Our Seas: Tales of Heritage, Memory and Myth brings together film, photography, live music and storytelling.

Produced by Tyneside Cinema and Pinwheel as part of the NS800 programme, the event features the premiere of Tides, a new short film by Sam and Anthony Gannie exploring the past, present and future of the Fish Quay, alongside five animated shorts inspired by local stories. Artist Olly Armstrong leads a trail of community-gathered tales, while AmberSide presents a gallery of archive images. Live music comes from Staithe, Armstrong and others, with original songs written in response to the Quay and its people.

“This is a celebration of North Shields in all its richness – its heritage, its people, its  stories and its myths,” said Katy Fuller, Director at Pinwheel. “Working with local  communities has been at the heart of the process, and we’re thrilled to share the films,  music and photography they’ve inspired. The Fish Quay has always been a place where  stories wash ashore, and this event is a chance to gather and tell them together.” 

Filmmaker Anthony Gannie, co-director of Tides, added: “The Fish Quay is full of voices  and memories that deserve to be heard. Making Tides was an incredible journey. This  project is about preserving those stories and sharing them with new audiences in a way  that feels alive and rooted in the community.”
