As part of the UK tour, highly celebrated and award-winning choreographer Arthur Pita brings his new modern dance piece Stepmother/ Stepfather to Dance City on Saturday 13th May. A new commission from Dance East and HeadSpaceDance, it comes as a double show which showcases Pita’s deliciously dark, bizarre method of storytelling, which has been compared to the filmmaking style of David Lynch; surreal, dramatic and exaggerated visual props, all accompanied by a deliberately distorted means of story expression. Stepmother brings us a morbid and grotesque retelling of classic fairytales, the darkness in them propelled by the evil vessel of the stepmother. Hansel and Gretel, Snow White and Rapunzel are among the fairytales that will be featured.

Stepfather, on the other hand, is a piece inspired by ‘Country Death Song’ by the American cult band Violent Femmes. It brings the audience a deeply disturbing story of incest, murder and abuse. Plus, with costumes loosely-based on depression-era America and a dark, barn-like location, you can see how the connection between Pita’s work and David Lynch was formed – there’s a very Eraserhead quality to it all. This couplet of shows is sure to take the audience down a dark, irresistible path into the twisted imagination of the Pita and the underlying tones of horror in the pre-existing stories themselves.

Stepmother/ Stepfather is at Dance City, Newcastle on Saturday 13th May.
