Kurt Wagner and his band of strolling minstrels have been Lamb-chopping away since 1986.

With eleven albums of gentle, soul-infused country already under their belt, including the brilliantly named double-release Aw C’mon and No You C’mon, their twelfth – FLOTUS – was the album of 2016 by an alt-country mile.  Swerving from the usual template, Kurt and the Gang have filtered their music through electronica, vocoder and lolloping house beats. It’s utterly beguiling.  This swerve into dance styling is not that unexpected either; Kurt has previously collaborated with X-Press2 on the ramblingly hypnotic Give It.

Taking FLOTUS (For Love Often Turns Us Still) on tour, King Kurt has slightly beefed up the gentle waft. Recent shows have seen him finale with a cover of Prince’s When You Were Mine or Bowie’s Young Americans. Being at a Lambchop show is akin to settling down to a splendid feast prepared by people who are right on the money.

However, having spent hours with the ‘chop in the past, even with their recent dance turn this is unlikely to be a balls to the wall, four to the floor kind of event. What you can expect when Lambchop come to the Riverside on Thursday 10th August is warm humour, good grace and some of the most lovely and embracing music around.
