Newcastle’s mental health and art-based charity are raising funds to build a community darkroom
Volunteers and staff from Newcastle’s mental health and art-based charity, Chilli Studios, are raising funds to build a community darkroom and processing studio to keep film alive, as well as to help improve mental health through creative means.
The moto of the project is “a safe place to develop” and it is looking to offer a learning resource that is accessible, inclusive and nurturing. To help do that they plan to run workshops, talks, events, field trips and more.
The community darkroom was dreamt up and made a reality by the Chilli Light Painters, a group of photographers, who meet at Chilli Studios. Between them, they have many years experience in using cameras of all types and want to pass this knowledge on.
Founding member Darren C adds, “We hope to inspire everyone who comes to the darkroom, and we are excited at the prospect of sharing our skills and enthusiasm for this art form with the community.”
If you’d like to donate, then you head to Chilli Studios’ JustGiving campaign. The money raised will help complete the construction, provide equipment and mental health training, as well as offer resources and programs.
