Who are you and where are you from?
I’m Iain Bolton and I am an artist and photographer who grew up in Lynemouth and now lives in Ashington.

What is it you do?
I draw, paint and take photos of the beauty that surrounds us that other choose to ignore, never notice or consider not important enough to be recognised. My work is less about castles and more about power stations, council estates and the stunning realities of my local area.

How long have you been doing it?
In its present form, I have been creating art since 2015. That’s a sabbatical of 29 years after leaving the educational metropolis of Hirst High School, Ashington (a haven of educational misery and failure) where I successfully gained my single O Level in Art in 1986.

What Inspires You?
I consider my inspiration comes from the lack of interest and discouragement from others and to prove to myself that they were wrong, and I was absolutely right to reunite myself with art and to show that creativity should not be an unnecessary luxury for working-class people. It’s a beautiful process to challenge that which you are not supposed to be.

Tell us about your work.
My exhibition ‘Know Your Place’ at RePUBlic Gallery in Blyth opens on 3rd February until 2nd March. It is an art and photography exhibition celebrating the unseen glamour of my surrounding environment. Much of my work is taken from South East Northumberland. An area that the tourist books encourage visitors to avoid. They even put Lynemouth in brackets on the road signs as discouragement.

Preview evening Saturday 3rd February 5-8pm.

What have you got coming up in the future?
After my ‘Know Your Place’ exhibition, I am planning further collaborative exhibitions with local artists in Newbiggin by the Sea in April, followed by a photography exhibition of my home village Lynemouth later in the year. I’m very excited to see how things develop.
