586 Records opened its door in September 2014. Since then there have been a lot of big changes, not least with the forthcoming release of their own website.  When well-renowned North East DJ and promoter Antony Daly first set up 586, the only vinyl available was second hand, stored in crates on table tops and on the floor.  Now, as well as bespoke units cradling the records, 586 has four listening posts, all containing Technics 1210s.  He is rightly proud that no other record shop in the North of England allows customers to listen to their chosen records this way.  I asked him what his long-term vision for the store was.  “When I first opened I wanted it to be stocked with great brand new releases, across many musical genres, with a wide selection of quality second hand records available at very reasonable prices.”  In such a short space of time he has achieved this and there’s no doubt he’s worked hard, but if you ask around Daly is one of the most respected and popular figures in the North East DJ scene, and this universal appreciation has helped move the record store forward a lot quicker than expected. “Away from the records I hoped that the place itself would be very welcoming and somewhere people would feel comfortable to call into, whether buying records or not.”

The popularity of both 586 Records and Tony in his guise as an influential DJ, has led to a monthly residency at the recently opened Vamos! Social, where he will be playing vinyl only sets.  The records he plays will be available for listeners to buy either on the night or the following day from the shop.  Tony feels this practical link between performance and record vendor is a far better way for people to connect to music.  “I love the connection of handing a record over, saying ‘I think you’ll like this one’”.

For those who don’t know, 586 Records is located on the third floor in Commercial Union House on Pilgrim Street in Newcastle and it’s a must visit for any vinyl enthusiast and the range of records available covers a multitude of genres. will be launched by the end of November.

Antony Daly will be DJing at Vamos! Social on Friday 27th November.
