Ben Robinson enjoys a humorous and captivating show from up and coming writer Adam Robson
Though Adam Robson is still in the early stages of his writing career, his show Angel? Not! clearly demonstrates his capacity for creating engaging art that is both humorous and captivating. Set against the backdrop of the celestial realms and Earth, Robson invites us to join the journey of a rebellious angel named Leo, who is exiled to Earth in hopes of reforming his ways. Yet, as Angel Leo develops a fondness for the human world, events unfold in ways that the angels never imagined.
While the writing is commendable, the performances elevate the production further. Grace Armstrong dazzles in the pivotal role of The Love Doctor, her sharp-witted physical comedy sent waves of laughter around the audience. When paired with Mykie Keavany as the lead Angel Leo, the chemistry between the two actors forms an electric energy that sustains the momentum of the show from beginning to end.
The concept itself is intriguing and could go much further. With a compelling premise that could easily translate into a successful film adaptation in the future, the show lays a solid foundation for future potential. Though it currently feels like a formative piece of theatre, enhanced production design and greater resources could propel it to remarkable heights. With time, who knows where this show may go?
