Reliably informed

For those with their ears turned towards the hubbub of the north-east comedy circuit, the name Heavy Petting could – indeed should – ring a few bells for you. The Middlesbrough troupe have become one of the great sketch acts on the circuit, with material that combines winking pop culture savvy, gleeful surrealism and a taste for the grotesque. Last year’s Edinburgh show Heavy Petting’s Hammer Time was a glorious mess of home-made weirdness, lo-fi conceptualism and left-field punning, whilst recent performances have included a turn as part of the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art’s David Lynch exhibition.

All of which should give you just a hint as to what to expect when their own night THIS returns to the Westgarth Social Club on Good Friday. As well as plenty of sketches and other silliness from the Heavy Petting gang, there’s also performances from fellow sketch group Cheap Craic, the superb Sean Turner (whose gift for deadpan, mundane weirdness is incomparable) and the utter chaos that is a Fernando set, a kind of light entertainer who has been locked in a vault for the last two decades and slowly, irretrievably slipped into their own baffling little world. There’s also the chance, if you are somehow yet to be tempted, to encounter “Britain’s angriest improv group” Sleaford Improv, which should be unmissable for the name alone.

THIS comes to Westgarth Social Club, Middlesbrough on Friday 3rd April.
