This summer, Tees Women Poets present a series of six Saturday poetry masterclasses, taking place at Middlesbrough Town Hall’s old law courts, which are designed to turn those who attend into ‘spoken word superstars’

Writing poetry can often be seen as a solitary experience, which is why women can feel reluctant or nervous to take up space in this way. During the boot camp, Tees Women Poets aim to provide a captivating audience to help improve self-confidence. TWP director Kirsten Luckins adds, “performance poetry is completely addictive! The buzz of taking the stage is an incredible boost to anyone’s confidence, especially when you’re speaking your own words, communicating your own truth – it can be life-changing”.

Boot camp facilitator Kym Deyn, formerly part of the Durham University slam team, tells us more, “we’ll write together, tackle our imposter syndromes, and help each other face the fear and do it anyway. Working with a range of special guest tutors will really push us to become the most powerful performers we can be”

The Spoken Word Boot Camp is free and for ages 18+. To apply, e-mail two poems to teeswomenpoets@gmail.com by 19th June.
