The North-East comedy collective shed light on the history of the iconic magazine by having an online chat on 16th April with founders Simon and Chris Donald alongside writer Alex Collier
The Viz was one of the first things I remember stealing from my mum as a child, after her social freedoms of course. I’d swipe her copy during its transitional period from front room to bin (we didn’t recycle in those days) to read in secret in my bedroom. Thanks to the good people at Felt Nowt (a co-operative Community Interest Company set up by a group of the region’s comedians) to get my Viz fix these days all I have to do is swipe my mum’s credit card to purchase an iPad and e-ticket, then just sit back and enjoy their The Viz livestream panel discussion.
Viz, which started as photocopied comic strips sold at local pubs, was a publishing and cultural phenomenon. It went on to be the UK’s third biggest selling magazine and introduced us to colourful characters such as Sid The Sexist and Biffa Bacon. To shed light on the history of the magazine, Felt Nowt presents a live, online panel discussion with some of the big players in the beloved and controversial comic
On 16th April (6:30pm), host Hal Branson questions brothers and founders Simon and Chris Donald about the first two decades of Viz before being joined by Alex Collier, who, in between writing for the likes of Mr Bean: The Animated Series and Danger Mouse, still contributes to this day.
The show takes place on Zoom but like all Felt Nowt production is filmed in a proper venue with top class sound and lighting. There will also be an opportunity for viewers to ask questions. Tickets are £5 and available here.
