Reliably informed

Back in the day, there was no-one on the planet who could make me laugh as long and as hard as Ben Elton. Having read every one of his 15 novels too, imagine my joy when hearing about his first UK comedy tour in 15 years, which visits Middlesbrough’s Town Hall on Monday 7th and Tyne Theatre & Opera House in Newcastle on Friday 11th October.

The ‘Godfather of modern stand-up’, Ben Elton exploded onto the British comedy scene and into the national consciousness more than 30 years ago as the host of the hugely successful, ground-breaking Channel 4 show Saturday Live which ran from 1985-88. A serial award winner, he has won three BAFTAs, two Laurence Olivier Awards and The Royal Television Society Writer’s Award. His hilarious blend of searing satire and penetrating observations set the bar for modern, political, observational comedy.

Given the current political climate, Ben Elton could not have timed his return to live stand-up better; there’s certainly plenty for him to go at. Ben promises to try and make sense of a world which appears to have gone stark raving mad. “The last time I toured I was still smarter than my phone,” he remarks. “Things have definitely taken a funny turn.”

Certain to be a belly laugh-filled show, making us cry with laughter at all that could rightly make us cry with despair or rage is Ben Elton’s special gift.
