Jonathan Coll enjoys a night of high-energy affable comedy from Ed Gamble
Whenever Ed Gamble’s name is mentioned there’s a reasonable chance that James Acaster’s will follow closely behind, as the pair have deservedly become two of the most revered comics in the country. Perhaps its unfair to label Mr Gamble as the savoury half of the Off Menu meal; Ed is an excellent comedian in his own right, without quite having the left the same indelible mark as his podcast partner.
Ed’s latest show, Hot Diggity Dog, is a tight, perfectly paced hour of comedy which draws on a series of relatable tales which include musings on neighbourhood WhatApp groups, Las Vegas, hypocrisy in comedy, cats, drag brunches and much more besides. It’s silly, high-energy and delivered in the sort of relatable, affable style which turns performers into stars.
The Newcastle leg of the tour was a lovely evening’s entertainment, taking place in the iconic Tyne Theatre and Opera House. It’s a charming venue, and always feels like a treat to see comedians of such renowned performing away from the trappings of larger, modern arenas.
A word too for the support act Chloe Petts. An emerging comic, and an absolutely excellent ones at that. She easily held her own with Gamble’s slick, polished comedy stylings and it likely won’t be long before she’s headlining similar shows of her own.
