On Wednesday 3rd November, the Tyne Theatre and Opera house will welcome the BBC New Comedy Awards final on to the stage. With its long history of welcoming comedic performers, nowhere seemed more suitable for celebrating those who bring us the hilarity.

Over the course of the awards’ 26-year history it has thrown many now beloved comedians into the spotlight and helped to launch their careers, including Sarah Millican, Russell Howard and Jason Manford.

The heats for 2021 have taken place all over the country, but the final will be hosted here in the North East. This is only fitting as the BBC named Newcastle the first ever City of Comedy in September this year.

Judging the event will be a panel of comedy experts, this includes Mawaan Rizwan, the BBC Young Persons Comedy Laureate, Lost Voice Guy and Lauren Pattison, with the awards hosted by Guz Khan.

Performing at the show will be a host of up and coming talents, all hoping to win the coveted prize. Performers include Lily Phillips, Molly McGuinness, Anna Thomas, Liam Farrelly, William Thompson and Celya AB.

The final will always be hosted in the City of Comedy, a title which will shift from Newcastle’s shoulders next year. So this may be your only chance to see the awards locally for a while! Tickets are free, but the venue has limited space and seats will be handed out on a first come, first served basis.

If you miss it in person, you can watch the broadcast on BBC One on Friday 5th November.

BBC New Comedy Awards Final takes place at Tyne Theatre & Opera House on Wednesday 3rd November.
