We’ve done a series of focus features to find out more about some of BBC Music Introducing In The North-East‘s top tips for 2020. This time it’s the turn of singer-songwriter Sophia

Who are you?
Hello! I’m Sophia.

What is it you do?
I’m a singer-songwriter!

How long have you been doing it?
It feels like I have been singing for as long as I can remember, all I ever wanted to do was sing. I started writing poems and stories when I was about 9, I had a bit of a wild imagination growing up! Then I began combining the two and putting my own songs together as I got a bit older. After college I was lucky enough to go to drama school for 3 years in London which I found so tough but it gave me a thick skin. It definitely helped me find out who I was as a person which massively shaped my songwriting. And now I’m here!

What inspires you?
My inspiration started from my love of music when I was growing up and the artists I played on repeat. I look up to them and still do! I used to put my headphones in and listen to music feeling like certain songs were about my life, it helped me loads and I knew I wanted to do that too. Then I started going to see live music with my friends, it was so much fun, and watching and being in the atmosphere was so inspiring. I have always wanted to be on the stage in one way or another!

Tell us about your music
I would like to think my music centre’s around storytelling and setting a scene through music. Especially recently in my writing I find myself doing this a lot more. I want to make music that listeners can relate to and can help evoke emotions or memories; good, bad, happy, sad and everything in-between! I love lots of layers and harmonies with a melodic pop sound with hints of folk pop too. I’m influenced by so many artists, some being Taylor swift, King Princess, Grace Carter, Maisie Peters, and most recently Novo Amor – his album and the production is literally amazing!

What have you got coming up in the future?
Lots more music!! There are a number of songs that I can’t wait to get out there, so I have lots to keep busy with. I have just released my most recent single SKIN which I wrote with Alfie Cattell. We have a follow up track that we worked on together too so hopefully that will be out in the world soon! I am working on an EP that I hope to release later this year which I am so excited about, I have met some really amazing creatives along the way that I am so happy to be working with at the moment and they have and will be a massive part of that! I would love nothing more than to do some live shows this year, fingers crossed! If not possible I am sure with the world we live in today there will be some way to do this virtually at some point!

Where can people find out more about you?
