Who are you?
My name is Ally Morton. I was born in Durham and was active in the North East music scene for around 5 years until I moved to San Sebastián in the Basque Country region of Spain in 2017.

What is it you do?
I am mostly known for my music as Massa Confusa, or for my collaborative recording project Five Pence Game, but I am pleased to announce Not Myself as my new band here in San Sebastián.

How long have you been doing it?
Not Myself was born in the summer of 2018 and is made up of myself (vocals, guitar, production), Aiur Retegi (guitar), Joxe Caballero (bass) and Gorkatxain (drums).

We started jamming just for fun. There was a long pause after this, and then I was lucky enough to find some time spare, so I listened over to what we had recorded in practice. I demoed 10 tracks, took them back to the band, and they liked them, so we decided to record them properly.

What inspires you?
Community and collaboration with other people. As Massa we showcased other bands with monthly events, and as FPG I wanted to bring artists from different parts of the scene together on recording. Here in Spain, I’ve put on various gigs too under the moniker ‘Día Guay’, and as a band we are constantly going to local gigs and diy shows (well ‘were’ given the covid situation).

Musically, Not Myself is inspired by the people we have met from the range of music and projects that we are or have been involved in. Aiur plays in Derive, used to

be in Kaizen and Ventura, and now plays solo as Pixalino. Joxe is a part of an electronic/experimental group called Alitruta and hardcore punk-band Ixo!!!, but has also played in many other bands including Jupiter Jon, Dollmen, Mar de Cristal and Pheasant’s tears. Gorkatxain has played in various bands too, but they were more for fun so remain untitled.

If we had to pick out some bands or labels, standout influences between us would include Smashing Pumpkins, Placebo, Joy Division, dEUS, The Fall, Jawbox, Dischord Records and Alternative Tentacles.

Tell us about your work/music.
Not Myself differs from my other music, as although I digitally recorded it, it has a more organic sound as a result of working with a real drummer instead of using electronic drums like I normally do. However, on recording there was still a fair amount of editing to do as Gorka improvised the drums, then I spliced the tracks together. Some drummers may be against this as a technique, but I think it adds to how the band started by chance, and how we have to work to tight deadlines due to our working commitments and the fact that we don’t all live in San Sebastián, all 4 of us live in different towns / cities.

Having Aiur as a 2nd guitarist to flesh out the sound is great too.

What have you got coming up in the future?
When covid 19 finally passes, or at least subsides to something manageable that we can live with, we want to perform our debut gig, and eventually release a full album, either in parts or in one go. Unfortunately, given the circumstances there’s no time scale on this.

Where can people find out more about you?
Like I said due to covid the development of Not Myself will be slow, but on social media our tag is @notmyselfeh. The ‘eh’ stands for ‘Euskal Herria’, which is a term used to describe the Basque region. We have a Bandcamp, Soundcloud and this track will be available on Spotify soon too.
