Who are you and where are you from?
Late Night Drum Club is a record label and event series founded by SWIN (Matty), an electronic producer and drummer in the band PLAZA and D. Topian (Ryan) an artist, illustrator and producer, both originally from Hartlepool and now based in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

What is it you do?
We started as an event series and collective in 2018 with events at Kommunity, The Tanners Arms, SR44 and Bar Loco. We established ourselves as a record label in 2019 to provide a platform for electronic producers in the north east and beyond. All the artwork is made in house and we pride ourselves on operating independently.

How long have you been doing it?
We’ve both performed, produced and collected music for many years. Ryan established local collective and event Ink & Dub in 2015 and held a residency at Lively Up at World Headquarters from 2014, where his interest in music production developed. Matty performed as a drummer in PLAZA from 2015 onwards and began making electronic music and DJing in 2017.

What inspires you?
We’re inspired by dance music from its history to the current community and culture. We love to contribute our own ideas to this community and also dig for older records, samples and anything that sparks an idea for a track. Seeing a DJ at a festival or club and being mind-blown by their set and selection is both humbling and inspiring for us. We also find art, film, podcasts, books and creativity in general a great source of inspiration.

Tell us about your music.
Our music is made with the dance floor in mind but also taking influence from broader musical genres. Infusing broken-beat with samples, synthesisers and swung grooves. It’s important for us that our work can be enjoyed in the context of the club and at home and we want to achieve this by maintaining a sense of musicality through melody. Themes for our music are often related to technology, science fiction, nature and consciousness.

What have you got coming up in the future?
We recently released the Altered State VA, which Is an 8 track collaborative VA reflecting on a year of lockdown. After months of lockdown away from nightclubs we began to sense that dance music lacked context and became more nostalgic. As producers we were drawn to slower tempo’s and we wanted to conceptualise these feelings of disillusionment onto a record that would be released as lockdown eased and life returned to ‘’normal’’. We are currently working on merchandise and our first vinyl release, as well as some events over summer.
