Focus: Cryness & IrisM

Who are you and where are you from?
We are both based in the Teesside area. With it being early days in terms of music making, we aren’t too interested in giving away personal details and want the music to speak for itself and be at the forefront. We appreciate it is a bit of a cliché but there is enough in there for people to get a sense of what makes us tick.

What is it you do?
In terms of who we are and what we do, Cryness (now Anemoia) is a bit younger than me but what connects us is a interest in making noisy, experimental music and having an ongoing conversation on not just the technical, dynamic and craft aspects but what certain sounds and textures mean to us, in terms of ideas and emotions. We also both listen to a lot of different types of music and get a lot of inspiration from new finds, whether it is recent releases or a new find from a obscure Soundcloud or Bandcamp.

How long have you been doing it?
I have dabbled a bit previously but it was listening to what Anemoia (he’s been making music for the last couple of years) was coming up with which kind of inspired me to start making music again and we regularly compare approaches, draft tracks and problems to tinker with.

What inspires you?
Again, we listen to a lot of music, which can range from the recent two Converge releases to going back to Autechre’s back catalogue and refinding those mad, mystical and bizarre soundscapes. We also take inspiration from the local area. We’re lucky in Teesside that you are only a few minutes away from both the seaside and the national park, which can help decompress and refocus.

Tell us about your music.
We are both massively influenced in form by instrumental, electronic music, whether that be classic Detroit techno or the latest release on Livity Sound. However, as mentioned previously, we listen to a lot of heavy, guitar driven music, so are influenced as equally by doom metal.

What have you got coming up in the future?
We are continually working on new tracks. We will probably release at least another one or two by ourselves, possibly another joint release. We are interested in working with others. Not just established labels but any others who are into making stuff but would love it if people make contact.
