Reliably informed

Are you stuck in with that ‘what shall we do this weekend’ conundrum? We’re going to offer you up weekend destinations filled with the best quirky happenings, both in and out of the region. Next up, we’ll take you on a little trip around Barnard Castle…

EVENTS The Witham
The vibrant arts centre is housed in a historic Grade II listed building in the centre of this delightful County Durham market town. Offering so much more than just music, their schedule is chock full of art and craft events, film screenings and workshops. A big favourite with touring folk acts.

ART The Bowes Museum
A stunning purpose-built 19th Century museum housing fine and decorative art, Bowes Museum is one of the region’s real jewels. Currently on display are a variety of paintings (including Goya and El Greco), alongside ceramics, textiles and sculpture. Their Shoes: Pleasure & Pain exhibition runs until October.

MUSIC 12 Bar Blues
A relatively new music venue for the County Durham town, the independent venue pledges to bring a variety of musical styles to Barney, with indie, punk, ska, hip-hop, Northern soul, rock and electronica all making regular appearances. Cocktails rub shoulders with craft beer and other quality booze.

FOOD No 15
The irresistibly tiny and quirky No. 15 Coffee House and Deli creates a welcoming, if squishy, ambience on the main road into town. Specialising in ‘exotic foods’, with winning tapas-style snacks alongside the usual pasties, sarnies and cakes. Occasional events also take place including book readings and charity events.

The Barney Jam happens on Saturday 3rd September, with free live music across seven venues in the town, fundraising for Cancer Research UK.
