We ask final year studying Fine Art at Newcastle University about their fine art auction on Friday 22nd November
Who are you?
We are students in our 4th and final year studying Fine Art at Newcastle University. This year is focused on developing a body of work for our Degree Show.
What is it you do?
This year it is happening on Friday 22nd from 5pm. Students, members of staff and renowned artists have donated work to be auctioned.
The first section of the evening is a silent auction for the smaller artworks. You get to walk around the gallery space and write down your bids. We then move to the live auction, where more expensive artworks will be auctioned off by esteemed auctioneer, Ronnie Pygall. We are then hosting an afterparty at The Lubberfiend 11pm -3am. DJs include Fiona Anderson, Batsey, Megan John and Florence & Edie.
How long have you been doing it?
The Newcastle Fine Art Auction is an annual event that has been running for over a decade. Previously called the Postcard Auction, the name was changed, we felt it didn’t represent the breadth of work donated.
What inspires you?
For us, this is an event that celebrates our artistic community. It is exciting to see work from 1st Year students to established artists. This event is for people to come and see what is going on in the Fine Art Department and to buy unique and affordable art.
Tell us about your work.
There will be a wide variety of work on auction due to the number of artists who have donated. Expect to see print, drawing, painting, textiles and sculpture. The artist Mali Morris, who is currently exhibiting at the Hatton Gallery has just submitted a painting. Artists Sean Scully and Anthony Gormley have both submitted prints. Alongside these established artists there will be work from students.
What have you got coming up in the future?
After this, our next Fine Art Auction won’t be until next year. Don’t worry though, the next big event in our calendar which everyone is invited to will be the Degree Show in May 2025. This will showcase the work of the students from the class of 2022-2025.
