Ben Robinson enjoys a night of infectious rock energy
Whilst the weather outside may have been gloomy as Sick Joy took to the stage at Zerox in Newcastle, the vibe inside was far from it. The location was the perfect setting for an evening of beats from three bands which are certainly here to stay.
Before Sick Joy took the stage, the night kicked off with the first of two support acts, Circus. This Newcastle-based four-piece delivered a set of their old-school indie rock that had the crowd intrigued by the local talent from the get-go. The buzz they injected into the room prepared the audience for the pulsating rock beats that would carry us through the night.
Next up, Newcastle band Kites amped up the crowd even more as they hit the stage, offering up their own brilliantly unique take on indie rock. These guys are for sure one to keep your eyes on.
From Sick Joy’s very first song, I couldn’t stop moving. Their rock energy was infectious, and the momentum never let up. The set was heavy with tracks from their debut album, WE’RE ALL GONNA F**KING DIE, which was released last year and achieved critical success. I’ve got to admit, after the concert I have gone back and listened to some of my favourite beats from the night including I Don’t Feel Like Dying, which is one of the duo’s most successful hits.
What really stood out was their knack for blending gritty rock with catchy pop beats. It’s a combo that had the entire crowd moving, proving that Sick Joy knows how to keep a room hooked from start to finish.
