Damian Robinson enjoys a night of telepathic soundscapes courtesy of the Dublin band

Generating an impressive reputation in the electro/punk space, the message and tempo of Dublin’s YARD has seemingly been getting harder and harder since they burst into the pop consciousness. Polite and punctual, any niceties are thrown straight out of the window as the trio launch into a set comprised of their earlier Lawmaker-era right up to their recent self-titled release which is the focus of much of tonight’s show – complete with the deep techno/Kraftwerk/Underworld (big) beats mixed in with low-in-the-mix vocals and even heavier break-beats.
Impressive on the live stage, there’s an obvious comparison with (Emerson-era) Underworld as the act focus on individual parts/aspects of the louder/larger soundscape – an act which requires almost telepathic communication and an understanding of when another band member is about to improvise and move the techno grooves into unchartered waters. A shortish set, the pulsating beats and movement nevertheless work well in Zerox, and its ability to drip sweat from the ceiling! Shout out to main support act Million and their ability to set a heavy tone in preparation for the future Underworlders.
