Reliably informed

In an evening of firsts at the Sage Gateshead, the Words Weekend Festival welcomed writer and 2015 Great British Bake Off Winner Nadiya Hussain to discuss her eleventh and latest book, Finding My Voice. Bouncing off engaging Chair Charlie Charlton, a warm and richly informative conversation shed a fascinating light onto the ‘contradictions’ of being a Bangladeshi woman raised in Britain. Despite the peaks and troughs the journey takes, Hussain remained effervescent, insightful, prophetic and modest throughout, keeping the audience enraptured for nearly two hours.

As the evening drew towards its end, a period of audience Q&As revealed that the roles that Hussain inhabits continues to grow in significance as well as number. Her frank and public acknowledgement of ongoing battles with anxiety and mental health has positively made her an inspiration. When asked how she deals with the challenges her anxiety presents, her answer is simple, yet profound. “I think we all need to turn down the voice in our head that says no and turn the voice that says yes up…”

The value of events such as this cannot be measured in numbers, but cultural significance and positive change. Nadiya Hussain and her latest book, Finding My Voice, offer that perfect combination.
