Reliably informed

After a seven year extended hiatus Slowlight Quartet are back with the release of their  second new single, Lullaby (for the end of the world), released via Jazz Sound Records. Featuring a new drummer, the vocal talents of YVA and additional guitar from Smoove and Turrell’s Ath Cassidy, the band’s latest offering is filled with a vocal induced tenderness that caresses the senses before exploding into a sax and drum driven explosion of sound. It’s a finely crafted and beautifully produced track that sees the band, who were on hiatus since 2015, return with a bang.

We’re delighted to be given an exclusive listen of the new single ahead its release. Here, the band tell us more…

‘Lullaby (for the end of the world) showcases a new side to Slowlight Quartet with the inclusion of both vocals (YVA) and guitar (Athol Cassidy) and a more groove based approach featuring double bass and synth bass. This is something the quartet were starting to work on just before they went on hiatus in 2015.

With the members being based internationally (UK / Finland / Montenegro) demo ideas were bounced around and ideas added before we finally (after COVID stopped us two years running) managed to get together in August 2022 for two days to rehearse and record two tunes.

This single was recorded live in the Cupola Studios in the old John Marley Centre in Newcastle’s West End under the watchful eye of engineer and producer Liam Gaughan. The vocals were then laid down later in Liam’s home studio with Athol recording the guitar remotely. YVA was given free reign in the outro to really ‘go for it’ which she promptly did!  Paul ‘zoomed in’ from Finland to oversee the session so it really was a triumph of technology.’
