Four days of film, music, theatre, talks and hands‑on activity designed to spark conversation and action around the climate crisis arrive at Alnwick Playhouse from 25–28th June
What a Wonderful World Festival returns to Alnwick Playhouse from 25–28th June, bringing four days of film, music, theatre, talks and hands‑on activity designed to spark conversation — and action — around the climate crisis. The programme blends creativity with practical insight, using the arts as a way into some of the most urgent environmental questions facing the region.
Saturday’s headline event sees Jon Boden present The Floodplain Trilogy, a specially devised response to the climate emergency, preceded by a Q&A with Durham University’s Dr Adam Holden. Film‑wise, the Playhouse hosts It’ll Never Work, charting a Scottish fisherman’s attempt to convert his boat to renewable power, followed by a short film and discussion with NIFCA’s Mark Southerton on lobster conservation along the Northumberland coast.
Theatre features strongly across the weekend, with Fladam Theatre’s Green Fingers appearing in both Berwick and Alnwick, and We’re All in the Same Boat bringing together 1st Alnmouth Sea Scouts and Alnwick Youth Theatre to explore young people’s environmental concerns. Elsewhere, the festival stretches out across Northumberland with guided art walks, mosaic‑making in local schools, lantern workshops, and a series of poetry events in Rothbury and Amble.
Practical sessions include a visit to an Alnwick Passivhaus, a panel on cutting bills and carbon, a Greener Berwick walking tour and Repair Café, and family sessions creating bug hotels at local libraries. Across its four days, the festival offers a broad invitation: learn something, make something, and take a step — however small — towards a more sustainable future.
