National Mackem Day returns to Sheepfolds Stables on Wednesday 12th August, bringing a free celebration of Sunderland’s music, makers and creative community. The event, delivered by Sunderland Music City, follows last year’s sell‑out edition and presents a broad programme highlighting both established names and emerging local talent.

This year’s headliner is Sunderland‑born Ruth‑Ann Boyle, best known as the vocalist of 90s chart‑toppers Olive. Her homecoming set will include the number‑one single You’re Not Alone, alongside material drawn from her wider catalogue. The line‑up reflects the range of artists shaping the city’s current scene: all‑female punk trio Claudia, formed through the Young Musicians Project; Sunderland Ceilidh Band, bringing traditional folk energy; and Northern Daughters, a six‑piece pop group made up of young performers from Sunderland, Washington and Whitburn.

The programme also includes Dear Sunderland, a spoken‑word‑and‑music piece from Unfolding Theatre built from letters written by residents across the city, and a set from the Abbie Finn Trio, featuring jazz drummer Abbie Finn with Harry Keeble (tenor saxophone) and Paul Grainger (double bass). Broadcaster Jeff Brown, familiar to audiences across the North East, hosts the evening.

Alongside the performances, a marketplace of independent traders and makers, including Under The Ivy, Roker Records, A Love Supreme, GrassiArt, Chris Cummings Art, Port Independent and Sunderland Music City, showcases the city’s wider creative output.

Admission is free, with advance registration recommended. Register here.

Michelle Daurat Sunderland Music City CEO adds, “National Mackem Day is all about celebrating Sunderland. Our people, our culture and our incredible creative talent. After the fantastic response to last year’s event, we’re delighted to be bringing the celebration back to Sheepfolds Stables. Whether you’re a lifelong Mackem or new to the city, everyone is welcome to join us for an evening of great music, great food and great company.”
