An anthology sharing the lockdown experiences of forty people who took part in the Words & Worlds writing residency has been made available digitally
The Words & Worlds project was a residency commissioned by Newcastle City Council in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and led by artists Natasha Haws and Elijah Young from September 2020 to March 2021. The aim was to help people from different communities communicate their lockdown experiences with creative writing.
Forty people (ranging from 13 to 85 years old) took part, receiving support via weekly workshops, phone call sessions and e-mail. The result is an anthology entitled Listen For The Birds, which gives us an insight into people’s pandemic experiences and their life stories. Some work is deliberately unedited to celebrate the uniqueness of every individual voice and some pieces are written anonymously or under a pseudonym to allow the participants to write freely and honestly.
The anthology is available digitally on the Words & Worlds website alongside recorded readings of pieces (available here) and portraits of some of the participants from the project (photographed by Martin Type Photography).
