NEWS: Nasty Women International Art Prize

If you’ve been waiting for a quirky celebration of local artists in the North East, then look no further than the Nasty Women International Art Prize 2018. Though not strictly for females only (the main requirement being that artists should share the common belief and importance of equality and human rights) artists are encouraged to submit their work by 30^th April to be included in the first round of panel judging.

Organiser Lady Kitt explains why the Nasty Women movement decided to host the event. “Last year hundreds of artists from all over the world gave their time and work to Nasty Women events – their generosity was overwhelming. It’s estimated that the movement has raised half a million dollars for Planned Parenthood and other women’s and LGBTQ+ charities so far. This year Nasty Women organisers wanted to create an opportunity to celebrate those artists and an art prize seemed like it would fit the bill perfectly!”

Organisers are holding an exhibition in Newcastle from Thursday 14^th June at PRAXIS Gallery which will show the work of every artist who enters the prize, including the announcement of 25 shortlisted ‘highly commended’ artists. The grand unveiling of the four winning artists will take place on Wednesday 20^th June, with the fourth prize winning an artist residency whilst the final three finalists will host pop up shows of their work in London from 4^th October. The overall winner, announced on 7^th October, will have opportunities to show their work in New York, London and Amsterdam later in the year. 

Kitt is passionate that the event will bring people together: “We would love to see lots of North East based artists entering and being showcased. It’s an amazing opportunity for artists at any stage in their career to have their work seen by curators and galleries around the world.”

This DIY and self-funded event is accessible to everyone, with the entry fee priced at £12, with a limited number of entries available for £5. Enter your submission, no matter the medium, before 30^th April.
