Sunderland city centre isn’t the first place you’d expect to find artworks made in the height of the Italian Renaissance, but that’s exactly what’s happening in the city from Friday 1st February until Monday 6th May.

Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens are hosting an unmissable exhibition of 12 drawings by Leonardo da Vinci to mark the 500th anniversary of the great polymath’s death. With works including Mona Lisa, The Last Supper and The Vitruvian Man, da Vinci is widely considered one of the greatest artists of all time. That’s why it’s especially exciting that the Royal Collection Trust has selected Sunderland to host this new exhibition: Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing is a once in a generation opportunity to see the works of a cultural icon up close. It’s also the biggest selection of da Vinci ever presented in the North East.

The exhibition will be followed up by an extensive community engagement programme coordinated by Sunderland Culture, a new organisation created to realise the ambition of a city brimming with creative potential. This presentation of works by one of the most important artists in history signals that Sunderland is certainly expanding its cultural horizons.
