God knows there’s enough in the world to be miserable about right now, nevermind the fact that you have to spend loads of cash and time with your family at Christmas (bah humbug etc.), but there is a silver lining to the festive season – for some reason, there’s absolutely shed loads of great comedy on. Perhaps it’s to cheer up all those Scrooges…

Anyhoo, The Stand in Newcastle are just one of many venues hosting some tip-top rib-tickling action in December, with a host of comics just aching to cheer you up. Things kick off in suitably charitable style on Sunday 10th December, with a Stand Spotlight Christmas Special, in which top up-and-comers are invited to shine a light on a different theme, with the proceeds from the night going to a local charity, which this month is The People’s Kitchen. If you’re heading along to see Stu Edwards, Natalie Sweeney, Sammy Dobson, Stanley Brooks, Daniel Triscott, Elizabeth Johnson, Seymour Mace and host Si Beckwith, the venue request you take a bag of food to donate to the charity too.

The official Christmas Special shows, running from Monday 11th until Saturday 16th December feature stints courtesy of socio-political satirist and all-round charming chappy Imran Yusuf, wry storyteller Jonny Pelham, Cork comic Chris Kent, Newcastle’s own Sammy Dobson and radio presenter, actor, writer, impressionist and the week’s host, Alfie Joey. Once the festive season is out of the way, Hootfest – from Wednesday 27th until Sunday 31st December – provides the ideal opportunity to finally leave the house. A sterling line-up awaits to help you see in the New Year, with sets from Chris Hutchinson, actor and comic Ben Crompton, Lauren Pattison (fresh off a tour with Katherine Ryan), NARC.’s very own web editor and resident funnyman Si Beckwith plus host and Geordie crooner, Steffen Peddie.

I feel more cheerful already!
