Simon Munnery is something of an unsung hero in the context of alternative comedy; a perennial nearly man whom Stewart Lee says writes the best one-liners of his generation. Tonight’s show represents a greatest hits set, vintage material is hung together with a slightly tenuous threads, but this is of little consequence given the hit rate of the material.
Munnery’s set flits between some of the best and most economic jokes you’ve heard, to more tangential rambling (anecdotes about spending time with the late Mark E Smith feature heavily tonight).
It’s a soulful, oddly touching set of two 45s, showcasing some of Munnery’s best material from the last 30 years. Brevity is the soul of all wit, as the old adage goes, and this is beautifully demonstrated tonight.
