Blood red poster? Barely intelligible band logos? Yep, it’s that time of year again! After another busy year mangling audiences with trademark macabre glee, Newcastle metal specialists Byker Grave Bookings return to the Star & Shadow Cinema on Saturday 30th November with the latest edition of their annual flagship. A packed all-dayer, the seventh Byker Grave Festival promises another punishing orgy of skull-crushing heaviness, showcasing metal’s grimy underground with acts from across the North East, the nation and beyond.

Among a wealth of performances, perhaps the most enticing is a rare outing for Yorkshire doom legends Solstice, who last year made an epic, bone-crunching return with White Horse Hill, their first new album in two decades. They share top billing with German outfit Chapel of Disease, whose first visit to Newcastle since 2013 (a UK exclusive!) comes 12 months on from the release of …And as We Have Seen the Storm… an electrifying third album that’s ignited an exploding international fanbase.

Elsewhere, Scotland is represented by speed metal merchants Hellripper and grind terrorists Endless Swarm; Birmingham provides sludge newcomers Opium Lord; with local black metallers Old Corpse Road and prog instrumentalists Altostratus completing the line-up alongside Nemorous – a brand new outfit who’ll be playing their first ever gig, with members of Wodensthrone and Vacivus in their ranks.

Ear protection recommended… and perhaps a neck brace too, for the day after.
