Focus: Will Walker (Metathetic Music)

Who are you and where are you from?
I’m Will, owner and Founder of Metathetic Music in County Durham. Ultimately, we’re a bookings company and promoter. 

What is it you do?
At Metathetic Music, we work alongside grassroots bands and artists to help them gain exposure and develop themselves to get to where they aspire to be. 

Whether you’re a metal band wanting to go on tour, and pop duo who needs help designing a stand-out press kit or a solo acoustic artist who is struggling to get gigs further afield, we will tailor our service to what you need and your budget. 

How long have you been doing it?
Metathetic Music in it’s current form is a relatively young venture and it’s ever-evolving and growing, more quickly than I’d expected! I first started promoting bands back in the early noughties when I was actively touring myself. As I reached my mid-20s and work and family took president, my involvement in the grassroots music scene all but fizzled to nothing and my local scene vanished. It was post-covid, and a severe bout of depression and anxiety that led me back to music and the beginnings of what is Metathetic Music today. 

What inspires you?
The power of music for my mental health and that of others. I was drawn to move from simply putting on the odd gig to building a business supporting grassroots artists as I was blown away by the talent out there, particularly here in the northeast! These bands deserve to be seen and heard, and I want to help!

Tell us about your work.
I pride myself on giving my clients what they need and charging to reflect this. Some booking agents and management will charge artists a flat fee and take cuts of money from bookings the band make themselves. At Metathetic, we don’t take money from artists for services they don’t need nor do we take cuts from bookings we didn’t secure. For example, we have artists in London and Scotland who have strong connections in their areas and have asked us to help them achieve more further afield. As such, we don’t interfere with their local dealings and take their money as we don’t think this is ethical. 

What have you got coming up in the future?
Lots of tours and lots of gigs!
