Focus: Unnima

Who are you and where are you from?
We are Unnima, an electronic indie duo consisting of singer-songwriter Rugile Aria Deveikyte and multi-instrumentalist writer/producer Denis Bellone. One of us is based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and one of us, well, in Jura, France haha! 

What is it you do?
We create music! It’s an electronic, dark pop sound. We are all about mixing the bitterness of electronic elements with the sweetness of pristine pop production.

How long have you been doing it?
We started writing music together in 2020, so it all began online, and a big part of our work still happens while we’re on different continents. We found each other online, as we were looking for collaborators passionate about the same stuff, and as soon as we wrote our ‘trial’ song, we just clicked! That’s when we made a decision that we want to work together even if it meant talking online a lot, and travelling a bit further to record or rehearse together. 

What inspires you?
Our complex human nature is our biggest inspiration. The idea that we carry the opposing forces of darkness and light within us and can simultaneously be strong and broken, confident and insecure, certain about one thing and ambivalent about the other. So, our music really reflects that, we are embracing our duality. 

Oh, and so many artists, to name a few: Sevdaliza, Woodkid, Radiohead.

Tell us about your music.
Our driving force is a search for balance between light and darkness, dissonance and harmony, dirt and clarity. Thus, the world we create as Unnima is gloomy and mysterious, but dreamy at the same time. We merge the organic, raw and acoustic elements with the digital, machine manipulated sounds. It’s rough, dense textures paired with smooth, longing melodies.

Lyrically, we dive into our complex inner worlds. We explore the realities of what it’s like when your mind is playing games on you and you don’t know what’s real and what’s in your head only. Darkness and hopelessness that we all feel sometimes. We are embracing the idea that the world can be a dark place at times, but we can dance in it together. ☺

What have you got coming up in the future?
A lot more music! We have released our debut single in February 2023, and our third track, Storm, is on its way. It will be out on every streaming platform on the 16th of June! Follow our socials and keep your eyes peeled if you’d like to hear it!
