Who are you?
Steve Luck

What is it you do?
I am a composer and musician and teacher working from my studio at 36 Lime Street in the Ouseburn in Newcastle Upon Tyne. I have two strands to my composing work. As a solo artist I have been releasing contemporary classical music for the last six years – four solo piano EPs and a couple of albums. I also compose for film and television and regularly work with production music libraries. I am the founder of the Atmospherica Composer Concert Series and before COVID I would perform regularly in my own studio as well as in other venues around  the north east. I am a member of the music writers committee of the Musicians Union.

How long have you been doing it?
I have been self employed as a musician since leaving university with a music degree in 1990.

What inspires you?
I am quite visual. I am regularly inspired to compose by imagery  – often with reference to a sense of place. If I am stuck when composing I will often look at photographs or watch a video clip and find that I instinctively react to the footage musically and it triggers new ideas that help to develop the work further. As a result I feel that my music can also be quite visual and can conjure up a scene in the minds of the listener.  I feel a strong connection with the north east region as a whole and my pieces are often inspired by local landmarks or history. My piece ‘Steel Bridge’ for piano and string quartet was influenced by the rhythms of old industry/ It was released as a single last year and is a tribute to the people who built the Tyne Bridge during the 1920’s. The video for it features photographs from the time of the bridge under construction.

Tell us about your music.
Variously described as “beautiful atmospheric fluid tranquil, gorgeous, astounding, the perfect build of tension and sublime release, a sense of wistful melancholy but at the same time uplifting and life affirming.”

What have you got coming up in the future?
