We find out all we can about the Teesside duo as they release their brand new single, Obsessed
Who are you and where are you from?
Ryan: Hi! I’m Ryan, an upcoming singer/songwriter from Teesside. I started releasing music back in 2018 in the form of covers, and then began releasing my own original music in 2022 after writing and producing for over a year!
Sam: Hello I’m Sam, a singer from the North East of England. I broke into the Teesside music scene a couple of years ago with my first single “Dancing with the Devil.” But I have been a little quiet since.
What is it you do?
Ryan: I work full time as a Research Scientist but my dream career is making a living as a singer. My job is quite structured, so having music as a creative outlet is what keeps me sane!! I’ve always loved singing since I was a kid but since releasing music I’ve found that I love the whole creative process, from writing, recording, recording videos, producing etc.
Sam: I’m a singer, vocal coach and choral conductor – basically just buzzing to be making a living from the things I love to do!
How long have you been doing?
Ryan: I started releasing music in 2018, but I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember, I have a vivid memory of telling my mam that I wanted to be a singer when I was about 5 as we were in a McDonalds drive thru and she told me I need to be more realistic – I don’t think she ever thought about that again but it’s always stuck with me as I’ve always known since then that it was what I wanted to do.
Sam: I’ve been singing and performing from around the age of 5 – classic answer of ‘singing before I could talk’ vibe. Me and Ryan have been working together for a couple of years. We already knew each other through a mutual friend and Ryan asked for help with his upcoming EP.
What inspires you?
For this song specifically our main inspirations sonically came from the resurgence of the pop-rock/pop-punk genre which happened in 2021 as we were writing this track, artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus who were at the forefront of that.
We both love that pop-rock vibe with a sprinkle of electro in there and found we both related to the message of the song which is all about reclaiming your narrative when in a toxic/gaslighting situation.
What have you got coming up in the future?
Ryan: When I started writing tracks in 2021 with Sam, I had a clear vision about creating an EP where each track details a different emotion or story in my life from the last couple of years as I’ve “grown up” and evolved into the person I am today. Now that I’ve got a handful of tracks, I can’t wait to keep telling those stories and releasing new music which will eventually be a part of the EP.
Sam: I’ve got a few songs in the bank that I would love to realise in the next year or two! My work takes over a little these days but this collaboration has motivated me to get the ball rolling again with my original music.
I can also definitely see another collaboration with Ryan in the future!
