Reliably informed

Who are you?
Sågaboi, a British-Grenadian rap artist hailing from South Tyneside.

What is it you do?
I’m a musician, events coordinator/host and Millennial Music (north east independent record label) partner.

How long have you been doing it?
I’ve been Sågaboi since about 2016, and have been building the project and putting in the groundwork for the north east rap scene ever since.

What inspires you?
My late Dad, Hughie Paul, a veteran of the Newcastle DJ scene and member of the 70’s Dundee Disco band Rokotto. Music as a career  has always been a realistic and viable option for me having grown up with a Musician as a father, and the hard work, dedication and never-say-die attitude that it takes to succeed has been ingrained in me since day one.

Tell us about your music.
I have been sculpting my own sound since I started this project, taking influence equally from my Tropical, Afro,

Dancehall and Soca side as much as my Northern Soul, Jarrow Crusader heritage. Having grown up very much as ethnic minority in my locality in the 2000s, I did as much as I could to learn and be amongst Music of Black Origin within the UK, as it has always resonated so deeply with me. I did my best to involve myself with the African music community in Newcastle as a youngster as well as the North East Hip Hop scene, and went on to set up shop in London for a few years before finding my identity as Sågaboi. I’ve done my fair share to give back to the burgeoning new school scene that I’ve been blessed to be a part of by establishing Millennial Music, an independent record label that I help to run with a few close friends/colleagues, and Flex Fridays – which was a monthly city centre live show pre-lockdown, where we showcased some of the best talent that the new school NE Rap scene has to offer, of which now there is plenty. It’s been an exciting and progressive two years or so and we have no intentions of slowing down now, pandemic or not

What have you got coming up in the future?
I released my first EP in January 2021 off the back of a series of singles in 2020. I’ve again been putting myself about all over the country, making connections with artists and producers from other cities and really trying to state a case for Newcastle as a force to be reckoned with on the UK Rap spectrum. I have loads of collaborations set to be released over the coming months, then it’s time to use everything I’ve learned and begin work on an album.

Where can people find out more about you?
I’m most active on Instagram and YouTube where my username is sagaboiflex. I’m also on pretty much everything else via the same username. Millennial Music also has a YouTube channel that we’re building that is home to the Flex Friday freestyle series featuring a lot of the North East’s finest emcees, and also a Behind The Scenes vlog, displaying the process behind our work as a label. This can be found by scrolling down on my channel, sagaboiflex.

Thanks for taking an interest in my journey and I look forward to bringing a show to remember to Narc readers and Newcastle as a whole as soon as we’re allowed. Stay locked in, this is just the start
