Who are you?
I am R J Wade, or Becky to my pals!

What is it you do?
I used to sing and play indie rock & roll songs in We Start Fires, but now I write dystopian YA sci-fi.

How long have you been doing it?
I started writing back in 2013 when I found myself out of work for a four-month spell. I thought – oh this is fine, I’ll write that book I’ve always wanted to write! Then after years of terrible drafts and lots of time spent actually learning the craft of writing, I released my first book – AURA – in August 2019.

What inspires you?
I’m an avid reader of New Scientist – that’s a great source of inspiration! More generally I’m interested in neuroscience, meditation, authoritarian regimes, the psychology of religious dogma, the developments in artificial intelligence and the effects of social media on our culture and our brains.

Tell us about your work.
AURA is the first book in a trilogy and it’s about a girl living in a futuristic, Big Brother-esque society, who discovers she has deadly powers. It’s like The Hunger Games, meets 1984, meets the Matrix, with a dash of Harry Potter.

What have you got coming up in the future?
I am currently working on book 2 in the trilogy! Writing dystopian fiction when the world right now is crazier than any book I’ve ever read is very strange, but having a creative outlet is definitely keeping me sane.

Where can people find out more about you?
They can head to my website here: or search R J Wade on Facebook – and they can pick up a copy of AURA from Amazon,, or any good physical bookstores and libraries!
